Individual Counseling
| Individual counseling? So, you may be asking yourself the question about how we, Sally and John, can be helpful to you with the problems that you are facing. We provide a lot of individual counseling. | ![]() |
- You might be unhappy with the direction that your life is taking right now … and might not know what to do to change the direction.
- Worry might be a factor for you … leading you to feel anxious or depressed a great deal of time, ruminating on thoughts that stress you and for which you have not been able to find answers.
- You might be struggling with questions or feelings that perplex you about relationships … with your spouse, children, grandchildren, family or friends.
- You may be troubled by loneliness or sadness and not sure how to change things around and bring more happiness to your life.
- Childhood memories or messages may be bothering you and keeping you from experiencing the happiness that you want in your life.
You may know that it is hard to change another person … but there are ways to change the way you respond to them, act around them or think about them. We can help you figure out the best ways for you to manage these problems. There are also often things that you can do to change situations and make healthier decisions about your life and experiences.
Research has shown that, after people call for help with a therapist, they often find the ability to figure out on their own things that they can do to make their situation better. We would ask that you pay attention to anything that is different or better between the time that you make the call and when you come to the first meeting.
![]() | At the first session We will talk about the problem or problems that you are having and begin to set goals for how you would like your life or situation to be different. We will want to know clearly about how the concern is affecting your life right now and how your life will be different when you have solved the problem or learned new ways to deal with it. |
We may suggest reading for you or other types of homework that will lead you in a different direction. We will want to answer questions that you have for us and will appreciate your thoughts about how we might best work together to help you with your concern.
While most of our sessions last about 55 minutes, this meeting may last a little longer.
Future sessions
In meetings after our first one, we will continue to focus on progress that you have made toward your goals and the changes that you want to make. We will help you to discover what provides you with the best chances of success with your situation.
Sally uses EMDR, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, as one of the tools to help people let go of painful memories or negative messages.
How long does therapy last?
This is a difficult question to answer. Most people say that they feel better after the first session and begin to notice progress right away. Some believe that they have accomplished their goals in only a few sessions (4 to 6) while others see a need to continue for a longer period of time.
Do I have to come into the office?
We offer phone, email and chat therapy as another way to help those who prefer or need to stay in their own setting rather than come to our office. Click here to find out more about online counseling.
